SCREENING & VACCINATION RECORDS

To work in any NSW public hospital nurses must comply with NSW Health's policy directive regarding screening and vaccination against specific infectious diseases. Although you may declare in writing that you do not wish to comply, this may restrict placement opportunities through Nightingale.

Nurses must provide appropriate evidence to satisfy the Policy requirements as follows:

  • Diptheria, tetanus, pertussis: One documented dose of adult dTpa vaccine

  • Hepatitis B: Documented evidence of a completed, age appropriate, course of hepatitis B vaccine and documented evidence of anti-HBs above or equal to 10mlU/ml or documented evidence of past hepatitis B infection (anti-HBc)

  • Measles, mumps, rubella: Birth date before 1966 or documented evidence of 2 doses of MMR vaccine at least one month apart or documented evidence of positive IgG for measles, mumps and rubella

  • Varicella: History of chickenpox or documentation of physician-diagnosed shingles or documented evidence of a positive varicella IgG or documented evidence of age appropriate varicella vaccination

  • Tuberculosis: Proof of a negative result following recent (within last 5 years) Tuberculin (Mantoux) Skin Testing.

It is strongly recommended that you prepare in advance for this requirement and bring all of the appropriate documented evidence with you to your interview (in relation to previous history of chickenpox, you can sign a Statutory Declaration at our office which will then be signed by one of our JP's on your behalf).

OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY INDUCTION

Inductions and training are of vital importance to all our employees as part of your contract to work as a casual with us. We have a duty to promote and encourage good working practices, particularly in OH&S (Occupational Health and Safety) and EEO (Equal Employment Opportunities) in all of our workplaces.

If you wish to apply to join Nightingale's casual nursing workforce, we need you to complete the “Nursing Worker Safety” module offered by our e-learning partner, WorkPro, which covers specific activities related to your role. This is a compulsory requirement when joining Nightingale Nursing and can be completed in advance, or at our office as part of your interview. Please allow yourself half an hour to complete the module.

On completion of the training you will be a safer employee, and your assessment result will be stored in a centralised database and readily accessible by any employer (with your permission).

To register and to complete the training, please do the following:

  • Go to www.workpro.com.au
  • Click “Employees register here”
  • Complete the registration process (this should take a few minutes), and click ‘submit’.
  • A screen will appear that displays the information that you have just entered. Please note, only the information that is important to the registration will appear, e.g. any licences and qualifications information will not appear in this screen.
  • Enter the numbers and letters that you see in the box at the bottom of the screen and click ‘continue’. If the sequence matches, a welcome message with your username, password, Candidate Identification Number (CIN) and Personal Identification Number (PIN) will appear as acknowledgement of a successful registration. Please ensure that you take a note of the information and keep it safe. It might be an idea to record the details in your CV.
  • If you provided an email address during registration, an automatic email will also be sent to your nominated address for future reference. If you are using gmail, yahoo or hotmail, you may need to look in your ‘junk mail’ box for the information.
  • Login, and click on ‘Induction Modules’. Complete the Nursing Worker Safety module.

Once completed, please include your CIN and PIN when making your application in order for us to be able to access your information and assessment results if required.

VISAS/ SPONSORSHIP

If you are not a citizen of Australia or New Zealand you need a visa to work here (details available on the following website:Department of Immigration and Citizenship)

The most common type is the Working Holiday Visa (WHV) currently available to citizens of the following nations, it is valid for up to 2 years (conditions apply) and applicants must be under the age of 30 years with no dependent children:

United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, Belgium, Japan, Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Canada, Republic of Korea, Sweden, Malta, Norway, Hong Kong, Estonia, Finland, Italy, France, Taiwan and the Republic of Cyprus.

Please note, this is the only type of working visa open to unqualified nurses. With this visa you can work through Nightingale for your whole stay, but not for more than 6 months with one hospital or facility.

Registered Nurses not eligible for the WHV, or wishing to apply for migration, may meet the criteria for sponsorship. This visa allows you to stay and work in Australia for up to 4 years. Nightingale may be able to assist you to find a potential employer in the location of your choice (nationwide). Under these circumstances we coordinate the visa application and act as the liaison between your employer and yourself to help speed up the process. There is no age limit for this type of visa although strict health screening has to be undertaken as part of the application. Dependents can join you (if conditions are met) and no work restrictions apply to spouses.

Registered Nurses seeking Australian Residency need to apply for Skilled Migration. Holders of this type of visa can work for Nightingale without restrictions in Sydney and all around Australia. Registered Nurses and Midwives wishing to come to Australia as permanent residents under this scheme need first to apply to the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC) - further information in next section.

REGISTRATION BOARDS AND COUNCILS

To be employed as a Registered Nurse in Australia, registration is required in each individual State and Territory in which you wish to work. Once you are registered in one region, with the Mutual Recognition Act*, it is very simple to register in subsequent States.

* Registered Nurses from New Zealand are covered by this Act and, if in possession of a current practise card, can easily transfer their registration across.

The registration process has recently been tightened for other overseas applicants (particularly for those who trained outside of the UK) so make sure you allow yourself plenty of time (at least 6 months) to have your application assessed before commiting to any travel plans (we actually recommend that overseas nurses confirm registration somewhere in Australia before leaving home.

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council conducts an assessment of Registered Nurses and Midwives who intend to migrate to Australia under the General Skilled Migration category. Through this process the ANMC determines whether Registered Nurses and Midwives are suitable for migration, or whether they may need to undertake further education in order to be eligible. www.anmc.org.au
